British Soap Awards 2011 - featuring My Vintage!

The power of Twitter struck again a few weeks ago when I was lucky enough to get chatting to the brilliant Julie Hesmondhalgh aka Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street.

Julie is a real vintage fan, and she loves the fifties style especially. We got chatting and talked through a few looks until she finally settled on a stunning Blanes wiggle dress in black with a glittering vein and front frill. And she wore this gorgeous little number to the recent British Soap Awards.

I think you'll agree she looked fabulous, and Corrie did well winning several gongs!

I was very proud to have another frock on the tele-box and it's been an absolute pleasure chatting to Julie, she is such a lovely person.

One's Royal Wedding obsession...

The 29th April has been highlighted on my calendar for quite some time, and I'm not afraid to admit that I am a little bit obsessed with the forthcoming Royal wedding! Party plans are being made and merchandise is being bought - it's a modern day fairy tale and I can hardly wait!

Last week, William and Kate visited my home town in Lancashire, for their last official engagement before the big day. Despite the horrid northern weather, Kate looked stunning in a shimmering navy blue Amanda Wakeley suit, with tousled hair and classic courts. 

Kate looked effortlessly beautiful, and this inspired me to take a look through some of her most popular fashion picks over the last few seasons. She might not be our number one fashion icon just yet, but with THAT figure and her new found position, it's only a matter of time before the world's design elite are pouring all over Ms Middleton to wear their clothes...

Collectable & Designer Vintage Clothing Profile - Zandra Rhodes

Zandra Rhodes was born in Kent in the 1940s and was introduced to the world of fashion by her mother, who was a fitter in a Paris fashion house and a teacher at Medway College of Art. Zandra studied first at Medway and then at the Royal College of Art in London. Her major area of study was textile design.

Her early textile fashion designs were considered too outrageous by the traditional British manufacturers, so in 1969, she established her own retail outlet on fashionable Fulham Road in West London. Zandra's own lifestyle has proved to be as dramatic, glamorous and extroverted as her designs.With her bright green hair (later changed to a spectacular pink and sometimes a radiant red), theatrical makeup and art jewelry, she has stamped her identity on the international world of fashion.

She was one of the new wave of British designers who put London at the forefront of the international fashion scene in the 1970s. Her designs have always been clear, creative statements - dramatic but graceful, bold but feminine and her garments have a timeless quality that makes them unmistakably a Rhodes creation. Zandra's inspiration has always been from organic material and nature. Her innovative approach to the construction of garments can be seen in her use of reversed exposed seams and in the stylistic use of jeweled safety pins and tears during the punk era.

Zandra designed for the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and continues to design for the royal and the rich and famous around the world. She has a loyal cult following in the USA. Over the years, she has had many academic and professional honors bestowed upon her, including six doctorates. She is a Royal Designer for Industry in the UK (conferred by Prince Phillip) and was made a Commander of the British Empire by the Queen in 1997.

She has made San Diego her other home and it was the San Diego Opera that commissioned her to design the costumes for her first opera, The Magic Flute in 2001. Currently, her totally original work from the late 60's and early 70's has become a major influence of world fashion, with her print designs being recognizably seen in the Paris and Italian collections. Zandra is the founder of the Fashion and Textile Museum in London due to open May 2003.

My Vintage Trend Report S/S 2011 PART 2

Continuing from the success of the last post, here is part two of my Spring/Summer 2011 trend report, (with a zingy vintage twist as usual of course)...

Club Tropicana

Moving on from the general floral trend of last spring/summer, this seasons floral print has got be be bold, brash and tropical! I for one, love this kind of print. We're talking real Hawaiian blooms and palm leaves rather than the traditional daisies and roses. Bright shades, large palms and hula flavours are a must! Look for fitted fifties wiggle dresses, floral vintage pencil skirts, 80s vintage jumpsuits and bright candy printed vintage silk scarves to work the tropical trend. And be brave, don't be afraid to clash colours or prints - go wild in the sunshine! 

If you do want to start off mildy and just tip your toe into the water then a cute tropical cocktail ring, printed camisole or hair accessory is a great place to start

Into the Blue

Admit it, you're at least a tiny bit excited about the forthcoming Royal Wedding, right? On April 29th 2011, youth and glamour will meet with etiquette and tradition as we all watch a little piece of history unfold...

So maybe it's for this reason that we've gotten in the mood for regal royal blue! Deep sapphire toned cocktail dresses, fitted jewel blue jackets, chunky azure heels and floaty cornflour pussybow blouses – this stunning and expensive looking colour that can work brilliantly for all skin tones. 

Shopping vintage for deep blue is easy, remember to have a good look through all eras as there are gems to be found from the flirty fifties, beatnik sixties, bohemian seventies and electric eighties!

You can also mix and match this colour in many different ways. An evening dress is great with either gold or silver metallics or during the day team with white, black or red for a striking look!
