Designer Vintage Clothing Profile - Hermes

The legendary French luxury goods house began as a harness workshop in Paris in 1837. By the 1920s, Hermès had the patent for the zipper in France, and introduced the first ladies’ bags with zip closures, and in 1937, the first Hermès silk scarves were born (today, a scarf is allegedly sold every twenty seconds). The company expanded into riding gloves, belts, and men’s and women's sportswear, and designed the now-famous travel trunks to meet the needs of the new automobile drivers.

The Kelly bag debuted in 1956 after Grace Kelly used a large crocodile handbag to hide her pregnancy. In the seventies, the first women's shoe collection and the first complete men's ready-to-wear collection were introduced. Actress Jane Birkin replaced her old straw purse with a leather Hermès number in 1984, and started the rage that is the Birkin bag. Today the Birkin continues to have the longest waiting list of any luxury accessory—about six years.

Hermès also has a complete home line, bed and bath linens, furniture, silverware, crystal and porcelain, office accessories, and baby gifts.

Vintage Fashion History - 1980s Power Dressing

The 1980s gave us memorable and distinctive fashions, none more so that the power dressing phenomenon. The eighties were very tailored, it was hard to go anywhere without at least a jacket, but preferable to wear a complete suit. This was influenced by several movements including the popularity of TV dramas like Dynasty and Dallas. Margaret Thatcher and the Yuppies lead the way to the huge power dressing movement.

But power dressing extended far beyond the boardroom. Dynasty was the hugely popular 1980s television soap that promoted fashions which shocked and stunned. The biggest change was the enlarging of the shoulder. One of the main characters in Dynasty was played by the naturally broad shouldered film star Linda Evans. Nolan Miller, the Dynasty film set costume designer, decided to work with her big shoulders and give emphasis to them.

Lavish use of both fine and costume jewellery was worn day and night on the show and with 250 million viewers worldwide, it naturally drifted into mainstream fashion. Huge earrings drew attention to the faces of glamorous women with super backcombed hair drowning in shoulder pads. Stones could be fake or real. Diamantés, pearls and thick gold chains were loud and proud. The more vulgar the better.

The women in Dynasty also wore a wide range of lavish and sexy lingerie - the black lacy teddy was a favourite for bedroom scenes. There was also the comeback of the silky French knickers and camisoles, the must have look for any eighties screen siren.

Both Dallas and Dynasty heralded the return of the shift dress in bold and strong colours. Fuchsia pinks, sea greens, gem purples, royal blues and ravishing reds shimmered in silk and polyester. No sleeve, collar or skirt was too big and colour clashing was both acceptable and encouraged.

Lavish use of fabric in batwing sleeves was in keeping with the excessive largesse of the era. The eighties were all about excess, everything was bigger, better and more indulgent than ever before. The glitz and glamour was ten fold yet all so more attainable. An ironic mixture of economic gloom and new found personal freedom saw hundreds of thousands of fashion conscious people fall deeper into debt in order to achieve the looks of their idols.

The shoulder pad began to act as an accessory for women in the eighties. Knitwear, sweatshirts, oversized shirts and T-shirts started to appear with detachable Velcro fixing shoulder pads. Designers tried to drop the shoulder pad in the same way they tried to drop the mini for the maxi in the sixties, but as in the case of the mini the public stuck to what they wanted and they wanted big shoulders! By its nature a shoulder pad creates a smooth line over the natural hollows of the collar bone area. Women suddenly noticed that shoulder pads smoothed out body postural imperfections and they liked the effect.

By the 1980s, patterned tights also returned, but now they were spotted or delicately textured lace, striped or enhanced with embellishment such as a flock flower, embroidery, bows or diamantés at the ankle. In the mid to late 80s, coloured tights sheer, opaque or solid that toned and matched coordinated shoes could be seen everywhere. Barely black sheer tights were worn with power suits through the eighties and there was of course always room for an American Tan pair of tights in any eighties wardrobe!

Despite everything you may read today about power dressing being dead, it is still alive and well in the corporate office simple well cut black or navy suit remains the staple business attire for women who want to be taken seriously.

We have now also seen a massive revival of the more glamorous eighties power dressing, particularly the large shoulder detailing of the Dynasty days. We have seen huge emblazoned box shoulders and sharp pointy edges all over the world's catwalks this year. One of the more wearable and popular takes on this is the one shoulder dress. Strappy or long sleeved, the one shoulder dress not overtly sexual yet holds great femininity and shows just enough flesh.

Accessories have also gotten bigger of late. Large statement necklaces, huge drop earrings and chunky wristwear are all over the high street and designer boutiques. An over size pair of earrings, heavy drop necklace or deep buckle belt, can give a once lifeless outfit a breath of fresh air

Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends 2009 - Mega 80s

The eighties trend has been hanging around for the past few years - we are still wearing leggings and ra ra skirts and some of us have even dipped our toes into the nu-rave neon pool this summer. But on the catwalks this season we have seen a big leap into what we call the "mega eighties". Think big shoulders, layers of lace, sequins, puff skirts, tapered trousers, shoulder pads, blazers and colour clashing. The bigger the better!

So if ever there was a perfect time to try vintage clothing then it's right now! And here at My Vintage we have plenty of eighties gear from the weird and wonderful to the contemporary and classic, with a whole host of goodies in between. Look out for quirky puffball vintage party dresses and Dynasty-esque shoulder padded vintage suits. Red and black has always been a killer colour combo so keep your eyes peeled for dresses like these, which are both under £80!

You can also work the red and black look brilliantly in the daytime. Again, shoulder pads are a must. Look for real power dressing outfits in more masculine shapes. If you're clever you can even mix this into a nautical vintage look that screams fashionista. This blazer dress is perfect - full of full-on shoulder power but short enough to avoid the f-word (that's frumpy by the way!)

The emphasis on the mega eighties trend is drama but that doesn't have to mean tacky or outrageous. For the perfect Hollywood glamour evening piece why not go for something in black with pastel shades of lemon, pink or sky blue. Think satins and silks rather than taffeta and lace if you want to follow the trend in a sleek understated fashion. This black and pink large bow evening gown is the perfect example and is available for only £75!

If you're young and girly and fancy being a bit more Michaela McQueen than Michaela Strachan then look for mini prom dresses with fitted bodices and puffed out skirts. Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends 2009 - Indigo Moods

The hottest trend for the autumn/winter season ahead simply has to be indigo moods. First and foremost you simply have to invest in some mauves, purples and lilacs for both day and night wear.

Look for purples with glitz, glamour and especially gold highlights for superb vintage evening wear.

But the indigo moods trend does not stop at purple, in fact it has much more depth. Like many of this season's trends, the context is more intense and intelligent that it appears at first glance. Driven by the global economic crisis, tones are muted and understated. And layering is key. Styles are classic and retrospective to promote longevity and value for money. Once again, clothing is an investment, particularly when it is vintage.

The key to this trend is spectrum, particularly greens and blues. Creating a whole outfit in midnight blues or teal greens is so the way to go. But don't be afraid to mix and contrast, purples and greens can look beautiful in floral day wear.


For a gentle introduction to the trend or a stylish add-on, look for accessories in jade greens, navy blues and shimmering mauves. Scarves, beads, hairbands and shoes are a great way to trend on a budget.

How To Make Any Body Shape Look Fantastic!

We've all heard of hourglass, apple and pear – but did you know there are actually 12 different female body shapes? Each one as unique and defined as the next, and all easy to identify. In this guide, we look at the 6 most common body types and give you some great tips on how to use your clothing to flatter and accentuate what mother nature gave you!

The Hourglass

If you've got big boobs, curvy hips and a nipped in waist then your hourglass figure is the envy of most women and the fantasy of most men! You have the most perfect womanly shape – do not hide it!

What to wear? You simply have to wear fitted clothing. You should clasp your curves and stretch your torso, so opt for V-neck cardigans and tight pencil skirts. A pointed stiletto could ruin the whole look to be sure to go for block heel rounded or peep toes for that Hollywood siren vibe!

The Pear

This is all about proportion, and certainly not weight. Your top half is trim and balanced but you have wide hips and thick thighs. You may also feel your legs, calves and ankles lack shape.

What to wear? Flat fronted trousers can be your best friend. If you want to wear skirts and dresses but aren't happy with your legs, then go for a pair of straight boots. It's best to avoid any patterns or pockets around the hips and waist. Wearing a feature belt over dresses or coats will put focus on your waist and create balance.

The Cello

You don't do small. Big boobs, big bum and big thighs, but all with an air of feminine charm – you are all woman! Your neck and legs are toned and shapely.

What to wear? Those boobs will look fantastic in a wide V-neck and this can be seriously versatile. Go for fixed waist skirts with sewn down panelling to flatter your tummy. A wedge heel will support your frame whilst showing off those luscious ankles. Stand tall and proud in bold block colours.

The Lollipop

The envy of many, and perfect for the red carpet. In evening wear you're sex on a stick – buxom boobs and slim legs that go on for miles! But daywear can be a little trickier, you find it hard to balance your shape.

What to wear? Bell bottom or bootcut trousers will balance out our big boobs, making you less top heavy. Try day dresses with isolated pleats to draw attention to your waist. Keep heels thin to match your legs.

The Cornet

You were a tomboy when you were younger, and as the years passed those curvy bits never did appear. Your triangle shape is not the most feminine and you seem to live in sportswear, jeans and vest tops. Little did you know that this is the very shape that is perfect for the catwalk!

What to wear? Your staple wardrobe item has to be a wrap or tea dress in a draping fabric and you can get away with any pattern you fancy! Skinny jeans are ideal for playing up those snake like hips. Heels should be delicate to focus on slim calves and exquisite ankles.

The Apple

The roundest of all the body shapes, and perfect for cuddling! You are usually the least confident but an apple shape is often just a little puppy fat or the dreaded middle age spread. Instead of draping yourself in yards of fabric, embrace your shape and adapt your style. Your body can easily be redefined if you choose the right clothing.

What to wear? Avoiding any extra bulk is key, so skirts and trousers should be side fastening and flat fronted. Traditional jeans aren't great with apples but if you like your denim then try a tailored, wide leg denim trouser. A small shaped wedge is the perfect shoe to show off your shapely legs. Accessorise like crazy, the bigger the better!

So there we have it, a few pointers on how to dress no matter what your shape. And remember, shape and size are very different things – so study our guide carefully before you try out our tips!

The 'Get It Right' 80s Vintage Clothing Guide

Well it's official, the eighties are back with a vengeance! Love it or hate it, we guarantee you'll succumb to at least one eighties trend by the end of the year!

Sure you can pick up some eighties inspired fashion from a high street chain or designer label, but why not go all out authentic (and save a packet) but buying original vintage clothing?

With a whole array of vintage clothes & accesories to choose from, from the sublime to the ridiculous and everything in-between, how can you be sure you get it just right? In this guide we explore the eighties trends you should be following and how to wear them at their best...

Acid Wash Denim

Very Agness Deyn, acid wash denim is back and as punchy as ever. We've seen some glorious mini dresses, skirts, shorts and ripped jeans, all of which can be found in there original vintage form. And if you're handy with a Singer, find some vintage acid wash jeans and make your own hot pants or mini for the summer. Don't forget jackets too, keep them cropped and fitted or blazer shape for a look that's bang on trend.

Batwings

Available in both long and short sleeves, the batwing has made a few appearances in recent years, so if you're lucky you might already own one. This time it's all about the colour, pattern and detail. Stripes, polka dots, nudes and sparkles are most definitely in. Material can be thick and knitted or fine and silky. The ever flattering batwing can also be used in the multi layer look, perfectly versitile.

Bold Colour

Neons are fab and oh so hot, but as long as it's bright, block and in no way understated, then you're right where you need to be. This trends are bound to build momentum as the summer months approach, so get buying now. Clashing is encouraged so get creative. We're talking orange dress, cerise heels and lime accessories – but if you're brave enough to carry this off then don't forget the St.Tropez!

Sequins

We've all had enough of the doom and gloom, so glitz and glamour has been reignited to make us all feel extra special! Sequins make an appearance on many other looks - jumpsuits, blazers and one shoulder dresses. You can find lots of sequinned eighties vintage gems, or buy something plain and get customising!

Zips

Not for the faint hearted, zips are mega eighties and mega trashy! Best in black, look for tops, dresses, jackets and skirts with oversize or contrast colour zip detail. This is one trend that must be kept in isolation, don't mix multiple zipped separates if you want to keep your chic factor.

Polka Dots

Think Grease, Fame and Barbie. Polka dots are a cute and easy to find print that can be mixed, matched and worn in any colour combo. Best kept to dresses and skirts, but found on some snappy little blouses, polka is even more tongue in cheek than the first time round. For extra punch, try oversize dots and for sleek summer tailoring go for tiny ditsy print.

One Shoulder

A one shoulder dress will blast you into the outer fashion stratosphere and beyond. Seen all over the latest red carpets, this look has just the right balance of sex appeal, glamour and class. For fun holiday wear try a micro mini one shoulder dress or a printed one shoulder play suit. For the pinnacle of evening wear chic, go for an all out floor length gown in simple shimmering fabric.

Jumpsuits

Never to be confused with the (very naff) catsuit, your jumpsuit should be big and blousey. Shoulder pads or overworked shoulders are good, buttons are great and drawstrings and sequins add glamour and grace. Make sure your jumpsuit can be pulled in at the waist and keep trousers wide, not tapered. For the summer months, go for a sweet and sexy short playsuit (loads of pretty prints available) This wearable trend could take you right through to 2010 so invest wisely. Or just buy enough to feed your fix all year! No decent vintage boutique or website will be without these all-in-one gems so get searching... NOW!

Blazers

If you don't own one already then you need to get shopping! The perfect item to give your outfit that tailored or boyfriend edge. A masculine shape is preferable, tartans and checks are edgier and big buttons are a must! Dark colours will be more versatile but don't be afraid to try bright whites, electric blues or ruby reds!

So there we have it, our distinct guide to wearing eighties trends the right way. These rebirths can go horribly wrong but with a little guidance you can make them work in your favour. And remember, the best thing about buying vintage clothing is the reassurance that you'll be the only girl wearing that outfit. And we all know how great that feels....
