Childhood memories of an 80s kid!

In 1982 a baby girl was born who in years to come would make her way through the world of vintage fashion with world domination on her mind. Yep, that was me! I have nothing but happy memories of my childhood in the 80s, so many cool toys, games, TV programmes, films and fashions!

It makes me laugh when I get customers in the shop who are genuinely shocked that 1980s clothing is vintage but I promise you it is! Vintage clothing is basically any clothing that's more than 25 years old...

I just had to do a bit of a round up of all my very favourite memories from the eighties, all these things played a part in making me who I am today! If you are in your 30s you are bound to fondly remember these as I do!

TV Shows

Kids TV in the 80s was BRILLIANT. I remember loads of shows I loved but there are a few that have an extra special place in my heart!

Wacaday with Timmy Mallet was a brilliantly bonkers part of TV-am (the 80s version of Daybreak) and was essentially just a man with a foam mallet getting kids to play word association and bashing them on the head if they hesitated, paused or passed. Genius.

Rainbow! Who didn't love Rainbow?! There was so much to love about this, Bungle the big cuddly bear, George the uber camp pink hippo, Zippy the hilarious puppet with a zipped mouth and of course Rod, Jane and Freddy! Not forgetting the title sequence and theme tune that made millions of kids up and down the country giddy as kippers.

The Shoe People - a cartoon about shoes in the back of a shoemakers shop who come to life and have a whole Shoe Town that they live in! This was soooo good, and probably one of the reasons why I am now obsessed with shoes! Margot the ballet shoes was of course my favourite. LOVED it.

I've saved the best til last here. Greenclaws was hands down my favourite ever TV show and I used to count down the minutes til it was on! Greenclaws was a friendly gardening monster who lived in a greenhouse with Owlma the owl and Iris used to come and visit. They always grew the coolest plants with teacups or chocolates or balloons or other random objects on them. It was epic!

Characters

You get attached to certain characters when you're a kid, I think sometimes for security. I always remember being scared that a vampire was going to appear in my bedroom (seriously, it haunted me for years) and could never get to sleep on my own. So my lovely Mum gave me a Walkman & headphones and every night I would snuggle down in bed with a story cassette. (NB for the younger audience this is the 80s version if an audio book!)
My favourite tapes to listen to were an Enid Blyton collection and a bunch of Care Bears stories. Oh how I loved those bears!

I was also a bit of a tomboy at primary school and as well as sniggering at the rudeness of Bart Simpson I also loved a bit of the filthy Garbage Pail Kids. They were vile.... but brilliant! Barfin' Barbara was deffo my fave!

Toys

I may at some point reveal photographic evidence of this, but when I was a child I was pretty much surgically attached to my Glo-Worm. For anyone that doesn't know, this was a soft toy with a cute worm face that's head lit up when you squeezed it. It was the bomb, honest.

Forget secret diaries ( I never got past 3 days of writing in one) it was all about Finders Keepers. Amazingly cool and girly toys with locks and a key to stow away your top secret valuable things. Like sweets and shells.

And last but certainly not least, there was Teddy Ruxpin. An adorable teddy bear with a cassette deck in his back - pop in the tape, press play and a story would be told. The best bit? His mouth moved too! In our house this feature was somewhat abused as my older brother put Michael Jackson's BAD album in the tape deck and suddenly we had the coolest karaoke bear in the world. Ever.

Clothes

There are many fashion moments of the 80s that I don't forgive my mother for, but the most memorable was the party dress she used to put me in ALL THE TIME! It had a tight white vest top and a huge turquoise polka dot ra-ra skirt. I had matching shoes, handbag and alice band of course. There are photographs of me in this hideous ensemble at various caravan parks up and down the country but we don't need to dig them out do we?...

There are lots of 80s fashion influences about these days that you might not even realise, infact if you look at this catalogue page from the mid 80s it wouldn't look that out of place in a modern magazine. The big hair, the retro glasses, the playsuits, the ankle socks...

I'm not sure I can say the same for this one though!

Did you grow up in the 80s or have kids back then? I would LOVE to hear about some of your memories and favourites. I could go on forever on this topic!

Drop me a comment...

Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends 2009 - Indigo Moods

To view items from the My Vintage Indigo Moods collection click here

The hottest trend for the autumn/winter season ahead simply has to be indigo moods. First and foremost you simply have to invest in some mauves, purples and lilacs for both day and night wear.

Look for purples with glitz, glamour and especially gold highlights for superb vintage evening wear.

But the indigo moods trend does not stop at purple, in fact it has much more depth. Like many of this season's trends, the context is more intense and intelligent that it appears at first glance. Driven by the global economic crisis, tones are muted and understated. And layering is key. Styles are classic and retrospective to promote longevity and value for money. Once again, clothing is an investment, particularly when it is vintage.

The key to this trend is spectrum, particularly greens and blues. Creating a whole outfit in midnight blues or teal greens is so the way to go. But don't be afraid to mix and contrast, purples and greens can look beautiful in floral day wear.

For a gentle introduction to the trend or a stylish add-on, look for accessories in jade greens, navy blues and shimmering mauves. Scarves, beads, hairbands and shoes are a great way to trend on a budget.

How To Make Any Body Shape Look Fantastic!

How To Make Any Body Shape Look Fantastic!

We've all heard of hourglass, apple and pear – but did you know there are actually 12 different female body shapes? Each one as unique and defined as the next, and all easy to identify. In this guide, we look at the 6 most common body types and give you some great tips on how to use your clothing to flatter and accentuate what mother nature gave you!

The Hourglass

If you've got big boobs, curvy hips and a nipped in waist then your hourglass figure is the envy of most women and the fantasy of most men! You have the most perfect womanly shape – do not hide it!

What to wear? You simply have to wear fitted clothing. You should clasp your curves and stretch your torso, so opt for V-neck cardigans and tight pencil skirts. A pointed stiletto could ruin the whole look to be sure to go for block heel rounded or peep toes for that Hollywood siren vibe!

The Pear

This is all about proportion, and certainly not weight. Your top half is trim and balanced but you have wide hips and thick thighs. You may also feel your legs, calves and ankles lack shape.

What to wear? Flat fronted trousers can be your best friend. If you want to wear skirts and dresses but aren't happy with your legs, then go for a pair of straight boots. It's best to avoid any patterns or pockets around the hips and waist. Wearing a feature belt over dresses or coats will put focus on your waist and create balance.

The Cello

You don't do small. Big boobs, big bum and big thighs, but all with an air of feminine charm – you are all woman! Your neck and legs are toned and shapely.

What to wear? Those boobs will look fantastic in a wide V-neck and this can be seriously versatile. Go for fixed waist skirts with sewn down panelling to flatter your tummy. A wedge heel will support your frame whilst showing off those luscious ankles. Stand tall and proud in bold block colours.

The Lollipop

The envy of many, and perfect for the red carpet. In evening wear you're sex on a stick – buxom boobs and slim legs that go on for miles! But daywear can be a little trickier, you find it hard to balance your shape.

What to wear? Bell bottom or bootcut trousers will balance out our big boobs, making you less top heavy. Try day dresses with isolated pleats to draw attention to your waist. Keep heels thin to match your legs.

The Cornet

You were a tomboy when you were younger, and as the years passed those curvy bits never did appear. Your triangle shape is not the most feminine and you seem to live in sportswear, jeans and vest tops. Little did you know that this is the very shape that is perfect for the catwalk!

What to wear? Your staple wardrobe item has to be a wrap or tea dress in a draping fabric and you can get away with any pattern you fancy! Skinny jeans are ideal for playing up those snake like hips. Heels should be delicate to focus on slim calves and exquisite ankles.

The Apple

The roundest of all the body shapes, and perfect for cuddling! You are usually the least confident but an apple shape is often just a little puppy fat or the dreaded middle age spread. Instead of draping yourself in yards of fabric, embrace your shape and adapt your style. Your body can easily be redefined if you choose the right clothing.

What to wear? Avoiding any extra bulk is key, so skirts and trousers should be side fastening and flat fronted. Traditional jeans aren't great with apples but if you like your denim then try a tailored, wide leg denim trouser. A small shaped wedge is the perfect shoe to show off your shapely legs. Accessorise like crazy, the bigger the better!

So there we have it, a few pointers on how to dress no matter what your shape. And remember, shape and size are very different things – so study our guide carefully before you try out our tips!

Your Online Vintage Clothing Guide

Buying vintage clothing is becoming ever popular and more mainstream by the day. And we don't all live in uber cool cities with bags of vintage shops to choose from. So most of us, through choice or not, are looking to buy vintage clothing online. So lets embrace this, put our feet up, make a cuppa and take a look at what vintage clothing the world wide web has to offer.

A good vintage clothing company will be run by people who are as passionate about their business as you are about buying their clothing. Such high feelings for vintage are great because any questions you have will be easily answered. You should also feel free to contact these companies if you would like advice on particular styles of vintage clothing or how to put certain items and outfits together. Most of these sellers have a real eye for fashion, cut and style as well as heaps of knowledge and experience of many decades of clothing.

The real bonus of using an online vintage clothes shop is that all the available stock is clearly laid out in relevant sections, with multiple photographs and descriptions, giving you the chance to browse in detail at your leisure. Most vintage clothing websites will sell a combination of mens vintage clothing and womens vintage clothing and many now also sell a range of retro clothing too. Another good tip is to search all sections of the website – as there may be hidden gems throughout. Bargain, clearance and sale sections are also bursting with vintage clothing – check these areas particularly if you are very petite or plus size.

Buying online is fantastic if you are the kind of buyer who likes to mix vintage clothing with high street pieces. Whether it's vintage dresses teamed with killer high street heels, or designer denim combined with vintage knitwear – you can easily cross reference between a whole array of different websites. Much more fun than trailing from one side of town to another in four inch stacks!

Vintage clothing websites are available twenty-four hours a day giving you access whenever it suits you. Once you have then found your desired piece(s) of vintage clothing, simply purchase online and let them do all the hard work! Orders can easily be tracked and within days, your fabulous new vintage clothing will be delivered directly to your door.

Vintage websites can also save you a packet! Internet only boutiques have lower overheads (no shop rent, rates, utilities etc) and therefore can afford to offer top quality vintage clothing for even less money! There will probably be a small postage charge but even this tends to be wavered if you spend over a certain amount.

Always check the terms of your chosen vintage clothing website, but most will have easy to understand policies for returns and exchanges and are happy to help if you come across any problems.

All things considered, buying vintage clothing online is an easier, more comfortable and hassle-free way to get your hands on the clothing you love. So have a good surf, find your favourites and get clicking - who knows what treasures you might find.

Spoilt For Choice - A Fashion Meltdown

For the 2009 woman, fashion is vast, varied and most importantly – accessible. Our high streets are overflowing with department stores, fashion chains and independent designer boutiques. In more recent years, the internet has offered us choices and opportunities like nothing we have ever known before and the ability to buy new or used clothing from anywhere in the world.

Gone are the days of carefully selecting your favourite dressmaking pattern, gathering the right materials and spending hours creating the most up to date look by hand. Does anyone even sew any more? The most we have to do is pull out the laptop, browse our favourite sites and wait for the perfect outfit to land on our doorstep. Heaven forbid it takes longer than 2 days to arrive. But is it really that easy?

Firstly here's the eternal array of different fashions on offer... What flock we follow? What icon we worship? There's goth, hippy, vintage, emo, casual, glam, indie, rock chick, sporty, trendy, retro, skate, surf, burlesque... need I go on? Whatever we choose we can be sure there are plenty of retailers both on-line and on the high street, all fighting for our business and offering everything we could possibly want or need.

But of course the choices don't end there. You couldn't possibly just buy 'a dress'. Is it mini or maxi? Shift or smock? Boob tube, halter-neck, strappy or wrap? Floral, striped, block colour, monochrome, neon or checked? Then there's fabric – cotton, silk, nylon, linen, denim, chiffon, satin, lycra, viscose? And maybe a little extra detail – beads, sequins, lace, diamanté, buttons, bustles and zips. And not to forget length and shape– mini, midi, knee length, maxi, a-line, pencil, swing, full or straight? It's enough to give the most laid back amongst us a headache.
But it's not just clothing we need to consider – footwear, jewellery, hair, make-up, nails, skincare, handbags, watches, scarves, hats, glasses and perfume – each one a single piece of the jigsaw that makes every woman so unique.

Each element of our image is so carefully considered and so dramatically influenced. The music we listen to, the books and magazines we read, the television programmes and films we watch and the circle of friends we keep. As well as a million other financial, seasonal and climate driven reasons.

Our fashion is fast paced, relentless and ever changing but we love it to pieces and it just keeps growing. Recession or no recession, fast fashion is here to stay – the love of shopping is in our genes!

All things considered, it's surprising that we manage to get dressed every day (never mind look so fabulous) but these exciting and dynamic decisions are what most women clearly thrive on. Spoilt for choice? Absolutely not – anything less simply wouldn't do...

The Vintage Clothing Epidemic!

Vintage clothing, by it's very definition, is by no means new. But the concept of vintage fashion is fast gathering momentum and settling nicely into it's guilded place on the high street and internet. So what is it that we love so much about vintage clothes? What are the reasons behind the worldwide vintage epidemic?

1) Celebrity Culture

Whether we like to admit it or not, we are living in a world where celebrities are king, with more influence and status than most royals! Be it actors, singers, models or TV personalities, our screens and the magazines we read are filled with our icon's latest look. In the past few years our favourite celebrities have been turning to vintage clothes more and more and boy oh boy have we been following suit... Whether it's vintage dresses, vintage knitwear, vintage jackets, vintage shoes, vintage skirts, vintage tops or vintage accessories, if we see it in the glossies then we will do our best to find something similar. It's also made vintage clothing more accessible, more mainstream and more acceptable than it ever has been before.

2) Individuality

You know the feeling. You've spent weeks preparing for the party of the year. Carefully and lovingly choosing what to wear, how to style your hair, what make up and scent to wear... The night finally arrives and feeling a million dollars you arrive – only to find your worst nightmare. Another girl is wearing exactly the same dress as you! It's a horrible feeling and one we all dread, but a perfectly realistic side effect of 'fast fashion' on the high street. So how can you assure you will be the only girl in THAT outfit – vintage clothing of course! When you buy a piece of vintage clothing you are buying an item that has one very important factor – individuality. Sure you can buy pieces that follow key trends but it's highly unlikely that any other girl will have the same vintage item as you. Your vintage clothing can come from any corner of the globe and from any era of time so it's bound to be super special.

3) Global Awareness

From the way we power our homes to the way in which our rubbish is collected, we have all become much more environmentally aware in recent years. We've managed to adapt to splitting our rubbish into different boxes and invested in energy saving light bulbs. We've even stopped leaving our TV's on standby when we go to bed! But being greener doesn't end there... vintage clothing is a fantastic way to recycle. Image how much quality vintage clothing is out there, thousands and thousands of pieces just waiting for new homes. You can even sell your own collection on – whether it's your too-short sixties minis or your dodgy eighties batwings, vintage clothing companies love to hear from you. We can all do our bit to help each other and the planet!

4) Money Matters

You know the old saying – look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves! If you're financially savvy then you are probably buying vintage already. To buy good quality fashion on the high street can cost enough, but designer labels can really break the bank. Buying vintage clothing is an excellent way to get the look you want at the fraction of the normal price. Not only that, but you actually making an investment. Like a fine wine or piece of antique furniture, as your vintage clothing grows older it increases in value.

So there we have it – save money, look super stylish AND individual, keep the planet happy and follow as many trends as your heart desires – it may sound too good to be true but vintage clothes really can offer the perfect fashion and lifestyle solution. So the only question is – if you're not buying vintage clothing already – why not?!
